Matthew Gil Painting

Guided by intuition and the desire to tap into the emotions within, Matthew makes whimsical, ethereal, and dreamy paintings that are full of energy. He primarily works in acrylics and oils, but lately, he has introduced cut paper into his work. Process for him is a kind of searching, he relies on a sense of discovery and looks towards the interactions between paint and colour. He embraces the uncertainty that paint can bring, playing around with drip marks and loose, shifting application of paint. Faces, stars, loopy lines, and gestural brushstrokes emerge from the canvas, working together towards a busy, yet harmonious surface. Matthew is interested in themes of longing, dreaming, and transience. His main goal is to reconnect to the joys of painting, creating, and expressing— so that he can understand life’s meaning through art.
