Morgan Calenso

Morgan Calenso is an emerging ceramics artist originally from Amiskwacîwâskahikan, colonially known as Edmonton, Alberta. They are a 5th year ceramics major at Alberta University of the Arts in Mohkinstsis, colonially known as Calgary. Morgan has been working with clay as their primary medium for creative expression since 2016. Their art practice takes inspiration from the natural world, physiology, and vibrant colour aesthetics. Ceramics is a very technically heavy art form, and when they are creating a work, they are considering how each action and decision they make with the clay in its raw form will give way to the emergence of exciting and unique results when the work is glaze fired. When a work is glaze-fired in the kiln and the silica and different metal oxides are reacting with each other, a moment in time is frozen forever. The results of the chemical reactions in the kiln and the flowing of the glaze are presented on the surface, and this makes each work unique. The selection of Morgan's work at this year's Show and Sale reflects their many avenues of current research. There is a range of gas-fired and electric-fired work, with wheel-thrown as well as slip-cast forms. The consistent drive behind each work is Morgan's desire to create vibrant, colourful, and unique objects that will add life and bring creative energy to a home.
