Sarah Ansell

Sarah creates drawings centering on naturalistic elements, exploring the intricacies of botanicals and wildlife figures. Much of her inspiration comes from examining the life cycle, referring to decomposition and the growth that it entails. By incorporating pen and marker, Sarah creates graphic and vibrant images that single out a few components of the subject. In doing so, she pays attention to creating as much detail in a single space as possible. Everyday encounters influence the artist’s depictions of organic shapes and greenery, finding beauty in observing overlooked remnants of nature. Living in a city her entire life, the disconnect from natural spaces is a common experience many others share. However, Sarah tries to notice the small ways these cycles exist day-to-day to alleviate this isolation. This attempt to reconcile her connection to these environments spans from observing the wildflowers that grow behind fences, to the dead birds on the side of the road, and the weeds that grow between sidewalk cracks. This fascination with the mundane coincides with her attraction to whimsical, dream-like spaces. Sarah’s exploration of the ever-transforming world and the wonderous elements that reside in its vastness results in beautiful, thoughtfully crafted drawings.
