Terri Lemire-Wilson

Hi! I’m Terri Lemire, a fifth-year illustration student at AUArts. I live in Calgary with my daughter, husband, and our two cats. My big loves include children’s books, sketch-booking, backgammon, and pie. My most prized possessions include a mounted and framed piranha named Wesley, and the ever-overflowing floor-to-ceiling bookcases that live beside my comfy couch.
I’m a designer who enjoys painting, illustration, and motion. I work on a wide variety of subject matter, but always come back around to themes of memory, childhood, and humour, with an emphasis on storytelling. Storytelling in art is important to me as a way of encouraging the audience to forge their own connections to an image. I like how that applies differently to my painting and illustration practices: in my painting practice, I feel that viewers should write their own narratives from the clues given in the image or title. This is particularly true for my landscapes, which are the product of memories and feelings, rather than any one real place or time. But in illustration, there’s a fine line to walk that’s quite different, wanting to communicate something specific without being too on the nose; it’s an enjoyable challenge. I feel fortunate to have opportunities to move between these approaches and enjoy experiencing how the practices evolve around each other.
