William Armstrong

The work centres around the observation of human spaces. Though most of the finished work is painted, nearly every work produced is informed primarily by my own photography. I am constantly observing, documenting, and then constructing and deconstructing the possible narratives these observations can represent. I create my compositions in my paintings from the natural compositions I see, finding a combination of people and places which cause me contemplation.  

Urban spaces have been influential lately due to their potential for many narratives, as places which are imbued with the history of past and present human impact. Most of the figures appearing in the works are strangers, their stories unknown to me and the viewer. I like working in the unknown, only able to guess at the stories around me based on what I see. The compositions are offered as an ode to the beauty and intrigue of reality, putting the viewer in different perspectives. The work forces closer examination of the lives of ordinary and everyday people.
