Phillip Murray Bandura MFA Candidate
"Cracked But Not Broken" is a Glass series inspired by the need to pivot away from Glass blowing during Covid-19. During this time, Phillip experimented with ice sculpture. The ice had reminded Phillip of the glass technique of crizzling. When you crizzle the Glass, you dunk it in a steel bucket of water; the Glass will break on the outside but not all the way through.
The series "Cracked but Not Broken" was made as a metaphor for the repeated struggles we all go through in life "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." The cracks in Phillip's artwork make the glass sparkle, relating to life as it is often the obstacles in life that give people their character. Making the work is a fiery and steamy event, and not every piece survives.
Phillip is a graduate (2005) of the Alberta College Design glass program (Calgary) and a Bee Kingdom glass collective co-founder from 2005 until 2020. Phillip has had many successes as an artist, such as Avenues Top 40 under 40 in 2010, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award, showing his work locally, Nationally and Internationally in Berlin, Greece, Turkey, and the USA. Many prominent collectors have collected the Bee Kingdom and Phillip's artwork, such as Elton John and the Aga Khan. Now Phillip is back at the Alberta University of the Arts as a candidate for his Master's in craft, focusing on Glass.
