This original watercolour painting features the Tanuki, also known as a Japanese Raccoon Dog. These well-endowed animals are an important part of Japanese folklore, usually being known as mischievous and jolly creatures with the ability to shapeshift. They often eat small animals and insects (such as the Japanese tree frog, also pictured in the painting) and occasionally feed on city rubbish as their habitat is invaded by expanding cities. Tanuki statues are a common trinket in Japan that is said to bring luck and wealth, which is represented in the painting through five yen coins scattered around the image (5 yen coins specifically are said to also bring luck). Another important symbol in Japan that is featured in the painting is the Cherry Blossom Tree (also known as a Sakura), which only bloom for a very short time in the spring, and represent renewal. This painting is 8.5" x 11" and is made with high-quality watercolour paints and acrylic ink on cold press 140lb watercolour paper. This painting is more delicate than digital prints, it will be shipped in a plastic sleeve and need to be framed once it has arrived to prevent water or dust damage.
