Starry Waters Oil Painting

The protagonist of this 24 x 36 inch oil painting finds themselves falling into a sea full of stars, not knowing how they reached this place nor if they will get out of it. The water has an otherworldly quality to it, seeming like a another plane of existence, and this is what I wanted to capture in this painting. I am drawn to the illusions that watery reflections are capable of, and the theatricality it can bring into a painting when the viewer’s eye is tricked before they fully understand what they are seeing. The costuming in this piece is late Victorian, based upon a coat I sewed that has dramatic puffy sleeves and separates this painting from the present moment towards something even more fantastical.
