This 8 x 10-inch illustration features a young girl staring happily at a buttercup flower while sitting in a grassy field surrounded by white rabbits. Beside her rests an axe that, much like her and the rabbits, is covered in blood.
This illustration was inspired by renaissance fairy paintings and the illustrations in Frog and Toad are Friends. I always loved their art styles when I was growing up, and I wanted to create something inspired by the art’s child-like mystery that once captivated me. The idea behind this illustration is about subverting expectations, and how things in life aren’t how you expect them to appear. Innocence and sin can live in the same body, and that life is never black and white.
