Daniela Szeőke
As a first-generation Canadian with Venezuelan Indigenous roots, my artistic practice bridges the past and present, exploring the joy and humanity within my cultural heritage. My work involves creating ceramic recreations and paintings of pre-Columbian figurines from the Venezuelan region, aiming to revive the silenced voices of the Tacarigua (Valencioide) people. Their rich ceramic and petroglyphic traditions flourished from 800 CE until 1500 CE when Tacarigua customs were violently disrupted by European colonizers.
My latest series, Reimagining the Tacariguas (2024), utilizes atmospheric wood, salt, and soda kilns - technologies my ancestors never lived to see. These historically inspired reimaginings invite viewers to reflect on what Tacarigua art might have naturally evolved into without colonial disruption. By exhibiting and selling these pieces in artistic and academic spheres, I aim to disseminate this rich culture while celebrating its new place in contemporary spaces.
