John Asilo is an illustrator based in Mohkinstis (Calgary, AB), who is a first-generation Filipino Canadian immigrant. His Filipino heritage remains a source of pride and inspiration for their practice, sourcing from their own personal stories to explore themes of identity and belonging. Like many practicing artists, art has remained a burning passion since childhood and often refers to these memories to create nostalgic vibrant color palettes within their works.
They are a lover of plein air painting, using the practice’s observational nature to influence their illustrations’ backgrounds and scenery. For instance, in his artworks their winding patterns found in the roots of trees and leaves transform into art deco inspired geometric forms that weave throughout many of his illustrations. Alongside his love of nature is a deep fascination with stars and how they represent an individual’s dreams and passions. Digital and gouache paint remain their main tools for expression, favoring a painterly style.
