Madeleine Raene Isaak
I became enchanted with ceramics in high school spending all my spare time in the art room. Finding inspiration in the forests and the places of my childhood, from vast trees down to the smallest mushrooms. My focus is on organic themes: nature, animals, and the human form. I love the way ceramics connect me to the earth and how I can relate it back to the things that bring me joy. Finding beauty in both the sculptural and functional pieces, while exploring the way useful objects can bring art into people's habitual lives.
I am drawn to a clay body of a deep red, leaving exposed clay to play off the shiny blues, and greens of the glazes that I love to use. The flexibility of hand-building and the meditative repetition of the wheel keeps me enthralled. I have been making abstract voluminous forms and small sculptures of creatures and mushrooms that I attach to my thrown vessels. I like the way sculptural elements mix with the more mechanical appearance of thrown vessels. My goal is to continue exploring how people interact with my work and how ceramics can affect people's everyday lives.
