Mindless Mud
Glass blowing and wheel throwing have become Taylor Knauff’s most comfortable states of being, both allow her to express her admiration of everyday objects. Through her journey with an acquired brain injury, Knauff learned the importance of appreciating the mundane rituals within life and found handmade objects to amplify connections to these experiences that we may habitually overlook.
Originally drawn to pottery for its raw tactility, Knauff completed a ceramics certificate at The Kootenay School of Arts in Nelson, B.C. With a desire to learn more, Knauff enrolled at the Alberta University of the Arts with the intention of completing a degree in ceramics when she fell in love with glass during an elective glassblowing course and immediately changed her major.
Knauff hoped the introductory glass class would offer relatable information and connectivity to her ceramics practice. Instead, Knauff was instantly attracted to the material’s qualities and the meditative process as well as the collaborative, family-like community that surrounds glassblowing.
Taylor Knauff deeply believes in handcrafted objects' ability to retain care within their lifespan and feels a connection to each piece she creates. Intentionally making for longevity and use, Knauff hopes her pieces can add joy to an ordinary day.
