Phallic Mud Bud
Rayna J. Menard is a fourth-year ceramics major at AUArts, originally from New Brunswick. Operating under the name Phallic Mud Bud, they create functional-figurative renderings of the male anatomy on pottery, drawing from erotic innuendos of the medium itself. From the sensuality of wheel throwing to the folds of the handmade mark, ceramics have been a creative outlet for exploring sexuality and acceptance since they first met in 2021. Raynas practice involves surface decoration and sculptural elements to enliven whatever room their wares inhabit. When you surround yourself with imagery that you personally adore, it improves your quality of life. The ordinary wares in your house can be the same. The artist enjoys creating imagery not traditionally available on ceramics in home hardware stores. With the intentions of drawing visual recognition to the diversity of our private anatomy, their work lens to the alternative crowds that like a little sophomoric humor, visual representation, and fun-foul imagery. The artist works best with a good playlist and feels inspired by the soft shapes of the human body, creepy crawlers, print media line quality and an array of musical genres. When they're not in the studio, you can find them at local music shows or hibernating at home with friends and family.
