Zoe Delisle/Shovel and Spade
I primarily work as a fibre artist, with a particular interest in combining print with fibre in experimental ways. Within the past couple years my practice has expanded and grown to incorporate the creation of cloth and fabric itself, as well as the dyeing and colouring process, then adding print and images, and fabricating a final piece out of the cloth. I intend to delve deeper into this process of creating every element of my work and finding new ways to transform fibre. By breaking down every aspect of how my work is created and ensuring that I have manipulated each part of it, I feel that I both better understand my own processes as well as the processes that have been passed down and are still in use today, while creating my own methods and artistic style.
I am primarily interested in iconography that experiments with portraiture. Specifically, I have done a lot of work experimenting with the proportions, structure, and reorganization of the face and the human form. A lot of my work uses colour juxtaposition and high contrast to stylize my subject matter and create a blend between realism and stylized forms. I often use this reconstruction of form to convey my own ideas about mortality, mental health, and my own understanding of my identity. While bright and eye-catching, my work aims to create an unsettled sense of identity through the way that I morph images into a new reflection of self-perception.
