Lizzie Wharton
Lizzie's work delves into the understated beauty of wildlife, capturing both the delicate and unsettling aspects of nature. She uses ink wash as her primary medium because it allows for a diverse range of detail and looseness in her work, and allows her to explore the shapes and forms of her subject matter through individual tiny brush strokes, and softer, unpredictable colour washes.
Through her choice of subject matter, she aims to convey a quiet feeling of the macabre. The pieces are not viscerally upsetting, but by focusing on subject matter such as bones, bugs, and scavenger animals, they seek to encourage viewers to engage with thoughts and images that are often repressed. These elements, while often viewed as symbols of mortality or discomfort, though Lizzie’s work become representations of nature’s cycle of life and death. She hopes to encourage viewers to find meaning and beauty in the darker, quieter corners of the natural world, while also exploring and finding joy and mystery in the supernatural and imaginary.
