Pastel, ink, and wood on paper 22x34 framed 32x44. I built respect for Indigenous and Metis students at AUArts and struggle to understand differences between their lives and mine, a Metis with no connection to that Heritage other than blood. This drawing is part of that struggle. An Indigenous village enclosed by a White fence is a metaphorical symbol of forced confinement and loss of place; characterized by trauma and sorrow transending generations. In a White culture the White Picket Fence symbolized ownership, home, family and a secure future. At the moment people are violently displaced in Ukraine and Palestine. But, hope lingers, for those still alive, of a return home to rebuild. There is no return for Indigenous people, the sense of belonging to the land is gone.
